Setup reCAPTCHA

The first step of setting up a reCAPTCHA is to sign in with your google account then go to the reCAPTCHA (https://www.google.com/recaptcha/about/) site to begin the setup. Open “v3 Admin Console” at the top right, this opens a form for you to register your website(s). Enter a nickname then select the version of reCAPTCHA that suits your site.

What is the difference between V2 and V3?

The new V3 reCAPTCHA will run an invisible verification of users by scanning your computer to check for bot-like tendencies and giving you a score between 0 – 1. If you get a score of 0 or close to it, you are a bot and if you get a score of 1 or close to, you are a human. When you install a reCAPTCHA plugin onto your website, you will be asked to set the strength of the check by using a sliding scale from 0 – 1. Setting the scale closer to 0 will allow lower scores to enter your site but bots could get into your site. If you set the scale closer to 1, the restrictions will strengthen but the downside is that it will return false positive bots, restricting real users who scored lower than your settings.

V2 reCAPTCHA offers a few options:

  • The “I’m not a robot” checkbox, a one click solution.
  • An invisible validation which triggers on an existing button such as a sign in button on your website (precursor to v3 reCAPTCHA). This will only prompt suspicious users to complete a task such as picking out the cars in 9 photos.
  • The last is an option for setting up reCAPTCHA on Android apps.

Once you’ve selected the version of reCAPTCHA, enter the domain or domains you require reCAPTCHA set up on and include more owners if applicable; lastly accept the terms. Once the form is submitted, it will register and supply you with a site key and a secret key. These need to be copied and saved to your site, either using a reCAPTCHA plugin or saved to other plugins such as Formidable Forms. ReCAPTCHA on Formidable can be found in Global settings => reCAPTCHA.
